Protect PDF
Encrypt a PDF with a password, in your browser.
Files never leave your browser
Password-protecting a PDF keeps private documents — contracts, statements, records — readable only by people who have the password. ToucanPDF encrypts your file locally, so both the document and the password stay on your device and are never sent anywhere.
How it works
- 1Select the PDF you want to protect.
- 2Choose a password and confirm it.
- 3Click “Protect PDF” to download the encrypted file.
Frequently asked questions
- Where does the encryption happen?
- Entirely in your browser. The file is encrypted on your own device and the password never leaves it — we never see either one. That’s the safest possible way to password-protect a document online.
- What happens if I forget the password?
- There’s no recovery. Encryption means the file genuinely can’t be opened without the password — not by us, not by anyone. Store it somewhere safe.
- Can I remove the password later?
- Yes — as long as you know it. Use the Unlock PDF tool to strip the password from a file you can already open.
